Die Live-Komposition „Recycling-Machine“ entstand als künstlerische Reaktion auf das Konzept einer neuen Ausrichtung des ORF Radioprogramms Ö1, das zeitgenössische und experimentelle Musikproduktionen einsparen – also aus dem öffentlichen Radio-Raum verschwinden lassen wollte. Davon betroffen waren in erster Linie Formate wie Zeitton, Jazznacht, Kunstradio und das musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst.

Der Gedanke einer öffentlich-rechtlichen Institution wie dem ORF, zeitgenössische Produktionen nicht mehr zu unterstützen oder zumindest extrem einzuschränken, würde bedeuten, dass ein großer Teil einer in Österreich sehr lebendigen experimentellen Szene marginalisiert, verdrängt und möglicherweise gänzlich verschwinden wird.

Als Anwtort darauf kreierte ich eine Sampling-Maschine, die sich am 20.10.2022 anlässlich des Festivals „RE_COMPOSED“ im echoraum Wien durch meine ORF Ö1-Kunstradioproduktionen fraß, sie recyclete und rekombinierte. Vierzig Stunden Radiokunst, seit 1991, die mit „Recycling the Future“ beginnt und mit „The Future of Memory“ ihr – vorläufiges – Ende findet.

The live composition "Recycling Machine" was created as an artistic reaction to the concept of a new orientation of the ORF radio program Ö1, which wanted to save on contemporary and experimental music productions - i.e. wanted them to disappear from public radio space. Formats such as Zeitton, Jazznacht, Kunstradio and the musikprotokoll im steirischer herbst were primarily affected.

The thought of a public institution like ORF no longer supporting contemporary productions or at least severely restricting them would mean that a large part of an experimental scene that is very lively in Austria would be marginalized, suppressed and possibly disappear entirely.

As an answer to this and on the occasion of the “RE_COMPOSED” festival in the echoraum Vienna on October 20th, 2022, I created a sampling machine that crawled through my ORF Ö1 art radio productions, recycling and recombining them. Forty hours of radio art since 1991, beginning with “Recycling the Future” and ending – for the time being – with “The Future of Memory”.
