ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES

The relatively high refusal rate of applications for asylum in several OECD countries in 1990 and 1991 is an indication of stricter control of applications, following persistent attempts to divert the RIGHT OF ASYLUM from its initial objectives.

In fact, attempts to misuse the right of asylum are detrimental to persons who fulfill the conditions of obtaining refugee status.

Apparently the various measures taken to stem the tide of applications have caused the number of new applications to fall; this has been the case in AUSTRIA, FRANCE, GREECE, ITALY, the NETHERLANDS, the UNITED KINGDOM and SWITZERLAND
